Darryl Reeves "Mercury"

One of my most anticipated releases of 2012 is the long awaited album from ATL based saxophonist & producer Darryl Reeves. It's been 8 years since his debut album "Diary of a Bandstand" & the new album "Mercury" was well worth the wait. With him on sax & his trio Kenny Banks (keys), Joel Powell (bass) & Kenton Bostick (drums), the four craft a superb album of 70's inspired yet modernly fresh soulful afrojazz funk with a hint of hiphop. Warm, funky & at times spiritual. "Mercury" features an awesome cast of guest artist including singers Valencia Robinson, Carmen Rodgers, Gwen Bunn, trumpeter Dashill SunnovahKind Smith & saxophonist Kebbie Williams. Check out his funky rendition of the Donald Byrd / Mizell Bros. classic "Think Twice" featuring Valencia Robinson & emcee D-Focis & prepare to fall in love on April 20th! Jose James "Strange Fruit (for Trayvon Martin)"

While doing his show, "Yesterday I Had the Blues: The Music of Billie Holiday" live in AB Brussels, velvet voiced Jose James dedicated his rendition of Billie's brooding classic "Strange Fruit" to the memory of Trayvon Martin. It's scary how befitting this song is to that situation.

Thundercat "Walkin' (Official Video)"

Bassist Thundercat, who's album "The Golden Age Of Apocalypse" topped everyone's Best Album of 2011 list, finally released a video for the tune "Walkin'" & it is as wacky as you would expect it to be with a colorful cast that includes Taz Arnold, Miguel, J*Davey, his brother Ronald Bruner, pornstar Havana Ginger and his Brainfeeder crew Austin Peralta & Flying Lotus who neutrilizes him in the end with his eye laser beams lol. Yeah it's wacky!

Leon Ware Feat. Quadron "Orchids For The Sun"

Not many has had a more influential or lasting career in soul music quite like legendary singer, songwriter & producer Leon Ware. Having written & produced some of soul music's most classic tunes including hits for Marvin Gaye, Minnie Riperton, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and many more. Also not being a stranger to the new wave of soul working in the 90's with artist including Maxwell, Zhane & Omar to recently with international sensations like Jazzanova & Liquid Spirits. So it is no surprise that the Danish duo Quadron showed up on his radar.  Upon moving to LA, Mr. Ware got the duo into the studio to come up with this beautiful sunshine filled tune "Orchids For The Sun" that recalls his work with Marvin & Marcos Valle. This tune is scheduled for release on 12" sometime this month!

Columbia Nights "Feel"

The excitement is building as we are getting closer to hearing a project we predict will be on our Best of 2012 music list. Record Breakin' Music released the next download from the soul trio Columbia Nights. This time they move into jazzier territory with an amazing rework of George Duke's 70's classic "Feel".

“George Duke has been an inspiration to our ears for some time. His mid-70s fusion period, brought to us by pioneering jazz label MPS, gave us classic records like The Aura Will Prevail, Liberated Fantasies, and Feel. These gems all spent plenty of time on the turntable as we crafted our EP over the past year. As Duke made the leap from sideman and session musician to groundbreaking bandleader and producer, his first solo projects represented a striking new approach to jazz, funk, and R&B. Lush pads, warm Rhodes, and far-out lead synths (not to mention incomparable keyboard chops) are just some of his signature sounds that have influenced our approach to production.

The Feel LP also represents one of Duke’s first efforts with a lyrical focus, and the album’s title track sees the instrumentalist offering wisdom through beautifully arranged, ethereal harmonies that resonate with the spirit of Columbia Nights. His message of transcendent love is one that we live by, and we hope that our re-imagining of Feel inspires you to do the same. ” – Columbia Nights
