Gwen Bunn "Epitome"

I was introduced to GA based singer Gwen Bunn by Phonte aka Tigallo & so glad for the recommendation. Gwen is an incredible singer, songwriter & musician, pretty young in age (compared to most soulful singers of now) but her music is very mature in nature as it draws from many genres before her. This week she released a leak of her first single, "Epitome" via youtube. Beautiful string laced love song with drum snaps that recalls 90's r&b/ hiphop ballads. (Think SWV). Her full project "Melody Dungeon" is slated to release later this year.

All Cows Eat Grass "Be Kool EP"

All Cows Eat Grass is the alter ego of former Jaspects member & Janelle Monae keyboardist T. Brown. Picking up from where the now defunct Jaspects left off, A.C.E.G.'s  "Be Kool EP" (as well as Milk EP) is a pulsating electrofunk affair complete with swirling synths, heavy drum beats & Brown's sincere melodies a la voice box (at times). Great tunes for long drives. Tunes that will have you dancing. Purchase both EP's on iTunes!

Columbia Nights

Record Breakin Records is starting 2012 on a great note with the signing of the killer soul trio Columbia Nights. Drawing from soul, hip-hop, R&B, electronica, and jazz, Columbia Nights hopes to add to the conversation by offering a fresh take on a timeless tradition. Co-producers John E Daise and Hayling Price made their rounds in Philadelphia playing the city's trademark blend of neo-soul, and vocalist Sarai Abdul-Malik met the pair midway through her studies at Howard University's Jazz Department. Joined by their love of vinyl, laughter and Thai iced tea, the Washington, D.C. based trio creates a unique sound rooted in balance; their sounds represent a synthesis of the analog and the digital, the bright and the dark, the warm and the wintry. In 2011 they did a soft release of their cover of Little Dragon’s “Stormy Weather” & now it's available as a free download.

Also, check out their EPK. The tunes in it are bangers!!! Can't wait to hear more.

Introducing B.jamelle

In the past 10 years, the DC area has seriously churned out some off the hottest & in demand singers on the indie soul & electro scene including the of Sy Smith, Bilal Salaam, Deborah Bond & Muhsinah to name just a few. That tradition continues with the entry of B.jamelle. You may have heard the songstress on recents works of Diamond District & Mello Music Group member yU. She describes herself as a "writer first, singer third, and dreamer in between". Her sultry tones can flow so effortlessly over the simplest to the most complex of beats & rhythms while locking the listener in to her honest lyricism. Each month since November, she's released (& teased lol) with gems that vary from headnodding soul to topsy turvy & hypnotic electro grooves. Each song features production from some of the DMV's elite including Slimkat 78, Mr. D Turner & 00Genesis all available as free downloads on her bandcamp page. Hopefully there's a full project in the works. Until then, dig in!

Cecilia Stalin "Step Like A Giant"

I have been waiting for this one!!! Sweden born, London based singer Cecilia Stalin finally returns with her second full-length project. “Step Like A Giant” is the singer’s ode to John Coltrane:
Step Like A Giant” is my way of reaching out to people today that haven’t been introduced to the music of John Coltrane, who haven’t been introduced to jazz in a way that appeals to them, to people who don’t know jazz at all and to everyone to understand what John did for the musical platform we all use today! (Hip hop/grime/soul/neo-soul/nu-jazz/broken beat/house/ dub step/garage/blues/pop/rock…and all the ones in between.)”
